IELTS Writing Task 1 — Laptop Market Share (Table) #2

We can see a table showing the market distribution of different computer brands in period from 2006 to 2007.

We can mention that there are three biggest companies whose market share is more that 10%. In 2006 HP occupies₁ almost one third₂ of the whole market. Its closest rival’s percentage is almost twice smaller₃ – 16.6. Acer takes the third place in the rating and is responsible for 11.6% of computers in use.

If we compare the situation with a year later, we can conclude it has not changed dramatically. The distribution remains the same. None of the companies managed to overtake their opponents.

There is one more point to compare manufacturers. We can divide them into two groups. Ones who improved their numbers over an analyzed period and ones who did not. The first set consist of three members – HP, Dell and Toshiba. Dell shows the biggest increase and Toshiba shows the least₄. Other firms’ marks dwindled and Fujitsu-Siemens level has fell by twice₅.

2. В первой части IELTS Writing нам важно максимально информировать читателя — дать ему точные цифры. Важно найти баланс между точностью и слишком большим объемом фактической информации.
3. … is almost twice as small/half as high — Хотя подобная конструкция иногда и встречается, я бы рекомендовал использовать более устоявшуюся.
4. … the biggest … the lowest.
5. … fell by more than half (from 4.8 to 2.3) — опять же стараемся максимально информировать читателя.

Трудность именно этого задания в скупой выборке цифр, где не прослеживается каких-то явных трендов. Тем не менее, эта работа даст читающему достаточное представление об изменениях, особенно если учесть рекомендации по цифрам.
